A cyst. What does that make you think of?
For some La Grande back pain sufferers, it would be a hint
to their pain’s source. But the diagnosis of a
synovial cyst as the culprit causing pain is an
intriguing one. Back pain and leg pain may develop from a
synovial cyst which is where La Grande chiropractic care at
Paulette Hugulet, DC, LLC is effective. La Grande
chiropractic care with the Cox® Technic is shown to help decrease
back pain and related leg pain because of a synovial cyst without
La Grande back surgery.
SYNOVIAL CYST FACTS
First, let’s discuss what
synovial cysts are. Synovial cysts are uncommon lesions associated
with facet degeneration and usually found in the lumbar spine at
L4-S1. (1) 33% to 40% of synovial cysts are linked
with degenerative spondylolisthesis and instability of the affected
joint. (2,3) Synovial cysts may produce sciatica/leg pain.
(4) Synovial cysts occur in females mostly in their 6th
decade of life, resulting in radicular pain
and neurological deficits. These cysts are generally
seen at L4-5 which is also the site of maximum mobility in the lumbar spine.
MRI is the diagnostic instrument of choice as it displays
the texture of the cyst (more or less fluid). (5) When
synovial cysts look lighter on MRI T2 images, they are probably
more fluid filled and less probably gelatinous or calcified, rendering
them potentially easier to reduce. (6) Synovial cysts
have been documented to disappear especially
if the cyst wall is not calcified. (7) Paulette Hugulet, DC, LLC works to help
La Grande back pain sufferers dealing with synovial cyst get rid of
them, too.
SYNOVIAL CYST CAUSES
Wilby et al describe a channel that joins
the facet joint capsule with the ligamentum flavum, the area where the synovial
cysts become visible. At surgery for these cysts,
they discovered that fragments of articular cartilage and bone were
in the walls of the channels in 89% of the cysts. This debris blocks the channel from draining and provokes granulation
tissue and scar formation likely leading to
synovial cyst formation. (8) Paulette Hugulet, DC, LLC works on scar tissue to
improve the spine’s fluidity.
SYNOVIAL CYST TREATMENT
Conservative treatment of lumbar spine synovial cysts is suggested
as some are included to vanish without surgery. (9)
Conservative treatment is reasonable. If the cyst does
not respond, then surgery is an option. (5) Cox® Technic has a history
of conservative care relief for synovial cysts. (10) As used
at Paulette Hugulet, DC, LLC, Cox® Technic succeeded in relief when
an epidural steroid injection didn’t. (11) In another case, a 75
year old man with back and leg pain and a synovial cyst treated for 3 months/16
visits felt 80% relief. (12) Cox® Technic at Paulette Hugulet, DC, LLC
is relieving for numerous La Grande back pain sufferers
with synovial cysts.
