La Grande PPI Use and Hip Fracture Risk

July 27, 2021

Hip fracture and GERD. We often write how everything in the body is connected. Here is another scenario. GERD or reflux symptoms drive sufferers to seek relief. Proton pump inhibitors (PPI) come to the rescue for many La Grande reflux sufferers. Unfortunately, these PPIs may cause pain elsewhere, specifically the hip for which the risk of fracture is increased, even though they help with GERD. Your La Grande chiropractor closely monitors our patients who develop hip pain, particularly if they are using PPIs, as many time chiropractic treatment does ease hip pain.

PPIs, GERD, and HIP FRACTURE RISK

Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are commonly prescribed and used for GERD and peptic ulcer management. The risk of hip fracture is higher for PPI users. Whether users take a low or medium dose, the risk of hip fracture is higher while those on a high dose were at even greater risk for hip fracture. Researchers warn that doctors and patients must realize this in order to be cautious in prescribing PPI use for a long period of time and be cautious in understanding what the proper usage of PPIs is so that they do not take it without a full understanding of the need for such use. (1) Researchers in the latest study of the effect of proton pump inhibitor use on hip fracture risk minced no words: PPI use is associated with hip fracture development. They begin their study by acknowledging that the effect of PPI use on the risk of hip fracture is controversial which set them on a course to see for themselves. They found participants who were 40 years of age and over and had been prescribed PPIs for at least 90 days. They then cross referenced any hospitalizations in these patients for hip fracture. They found that fractures developed more often in PPI users than in non-users and that fracture risk linked to PPI use rose with duration of use. (2) Avoiding hip pain is certainly preferable, and chiropractic treatment may be gentle and relieving for many.

CHIROPRACTIC TREATMENT OF HIP PAIN

Chiropractic care of the hip and hip pain can be relieving for hip pain sufferers. As Dr. Robert Hayden described in a recent Prevention magazine article, chiropractic patients who sought care for spine, hip or shoulder pain said they had less pain after 4 months than those who saw a medical doctor…and their costs were less! (3,4) Hip pain is a common complaint heard in the chiropractic practice, specifically in patients who are more than 60 years of age. Manual therapy treatments, spinal manipulation (especially gentle Cox® Technic), exercise, electrotherapy and such are common ways to treat and relieve hip pain.
