Women who dealt with back pain before getting pregnant had a higher risk of pain throughout pregnancy. (1) For post-menopausal women on the whole there is a bigger risk of osteoporosis due to the rapid bone loss attributed to estrogen reduction. Factors like obesity, age at menarche, breastfeeding, and parity also contribute. In a new report, the prevalence for osteoporosis was 35.24%. Particularly, the risk for post-menopausal osteoporosis increased with the number of children a woman had (higher at more than 4 children) and with the older age (highest at over 35 years) of the mother at the last childbirth. (2) Each full-term pregnancy increases the risk of acquiring degenerative spondylolisthesis by 22%. A hysterectomy doubles a woman’s odds. Why? It’s proposed that it’s because of low back pain and diminished abdominal muscles during and after pregnancy that establishes the spine for this condition. (3) One study points out the fact that weak abdominal muscles affect the stability of the spine and likely contribute to the condition known as degenerative spondylolisthesis.
