EXERCISE PROGRAM FOR LUMBAR SPINAL STENOSIS TESTED
The aim of this preposed study is to investigate whether adding an exercise program to an educational program can improve walking capacity in those who have lumbar spinal stenosis with neurogenic claudication. Being a randomized controlled clinical trial, 60 participants will be randomly divided into either the control group or the intervention group. The intervention group will receive an educational program and an exercise program, while the control group will only receive the educational program. The main outcome measure is walking capacity, while the secondary outcome measures are pain intensity, disability level, and quality of life. (1) Dr. Paulette Hugulet, DC, LLC knows our La Grande spinal stenosis patients are very interested in these outcomes!LUMBAR SPINAL STENOSIS WITH NEUROGENIC CLAUDICATION
Lumbar spinal stenosis with neurogenic claudication is a condition that produces narrowing of the spinal canal in the lower back region, resulting in pressure on the nerves. This can lead to pain, numbness, and weakness in the legs and buttocks. In severe cases, it can also cause difficulty walking. The condition is most common in people over 50 years old. These are just the people in La Grande who need to keep (or at least begin) exercising!
THE EXERCISES
The particular exercises that will be utilized in this trial are made to improve walking capacity by stretching and strengthening the muscles surrounding the spine. The hope is that by doing these exercises on a regular basis, patients will feel less pain and disability and experience a better quality of life.
THE CONTROL GROUP
The control group in this trial will only receive an educational program about their condition and how to manage it. While education is important, it is not typically enough on its own to deliver significant relief from symptoms. That's why adding exercise is so important. It involves the back pain patient in his or her relief!
