January 08, 2019

What do stiff, popping, cracking knees and olive oil, fruits, veggies and red wine have in common? Knee osteoarthritis! La Grande knee pain sufferers know that morning routine with “bad” knees, the stiffness and pain that comes with getting up and moving. Dr. Paulette Hugulet, DC, LLC hears our La Grande chiropractic patients bemoan this all the time. Those La Grande knee pain sufferers would appreciate getting some relief. What’s one way to get some relief? The Mediterranean diet that involves, of all things, eating. Dr. Paulette Hugulet, DC, LLC asks “How hard can eating be for La Grande knee pain relief?”

La Grande OSTEOARTHRITIS SUFFERERS AND THEIR PAIN

La Grande knee osteoarthritis is ordinary. There are numerous La Grande knee pain sufferers. They are not alone! 240 million people around the world endure osteoarthritis. That affects about 10% of men and 18% of women. (1) Any La Grande knee osteoarthritis sufferer recognizes the knee pain, the morning stiffness, and the creaky joint motion that lowers the quality of daily life. (1) It is just not much fun. Now a Mediterranean diet could be some fun though!

WHAT TO EAT ON A MEDITERRANEAN DIET

The Mediterranean diet incorporates lots of fruits and vegetable, legumes and nuts, cereals and seeds, seafood and fish. The Mediterranean diet permits moderate intake of dairy, poultry and eggs along with red wine and olive oil as the chief source of dietary lipids. (1) Yum! Eating a Mediterranean diet can be very tasty as well as exciting for a recent Mediterranean diet adherent.

BENEFITS OF THE MEDITERRANEAN DIET

Knee osteoarthritis involves inflammation as well as pain. An analysis of three studies highlights that biomarkers of inflammation and cartilage degradation due to osteoarthritis fell in the Mediterranean diet group. (1) Particularly, the pro-inflammatory cytokine IL-1α decreased in the Mediterranean diet group. (2) Knee osteoarthritis patients who stuck to a Mediterranean diet show a lowered risk of deteriorating knee pain at 4 years follow up. For those who didn’t experience knee osteoarthritis at the start of the 4 years study and followed a Mediterranean diet, a 9% lowered risk of getting knee osteoarthritis was found. (3) Overall, a higher faithfulness to a Mediterranean diet is affiliated with improved quality of life and less pain, disability and depressive symptoms. (4)
